Can't connect to wireless network. Stays on "Acquiring Network Address" screen.
I recently re-install XP Pro w/SP3 and unable to connect through my wireless network. I'm still able to see the surrounding wireless networks around me but it stays on the "acquiring network address" screen and doesn't connect. Prior to the re-install I had no problems at all connecting to the network. I'll probably be asked why I did the re-install in the first place, and the answer is this: I do audio production and my audio hardware interface and software were no longer working due to all the Window updates, more specifically IE8. After trying to troubleshoot that problem and I just gave up and decided that a reinstall was in need anyways. Not sure what other details I can provide without being asked. I've done numerous searches on Google with keywords "acquiring network address" and have tried all the troubleshooting tips I came across. In IP Config I am not showing an IP address, just zeroes (000.00.0.0, etc). I thought that maybe I had damaged my network card, so I just bought a new one and replaced it and still the same problem. So this leads to me to believe it is a Windows problem. I'm looking for any help I can get on this, thanks. 11 people need an answerI do too

I have the same problem on Windows XP Home Edition. No problems previously but since installing SP3, Windows is now constantly trying to aquire the network address despite the Netgear WG111v2 utility showing excellent strength signal? Have tried using both Netgear and Windows Wireless to configure the connection and uninstalled SP3 to no avail?

Hello AllI have a possible solution but I have not tried it yet. I was searching for the information on the net & came up with multiple possible approaches. I will gist them here.1) Can be this : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/815485 or http://support.microsoft.com/kb/9537612) Snippet from the internetWow…I finally resolved my Atheros problems by installing the version provided by Acer 7.6.0.224 instead of the newer version (by 3 months) provided by MS (7.6.0.260). With the MS driver installed, it was continuously dropping my connection (status would show connected, but Messenger kept having to reconnect). Working great every since installing the Acer version. Apparently, MS **** it up.3) Disable / Enable Wireless Zero Configuration Service4) Delete The Network Controller & Install It5) Run the following commands in order ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew6) Restart DHCP Service7) Reset the ip service using netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt8) Manually assign the DNS & gateway (I already have the IP assigned on DHCP but not these). Surprising!!!. Can be related to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953761. (Repeated Link) Hotfix is available there. This seems to be the best bet. However try other things mentioned above before applying this hotfix. I had this problem after I allowed an automatic update on SP3. It was working on SP3 without before the update. So I guess something must have gotten trashed in the process. Is anyone else having the symptom where a service startup type cant be changed in the msconfig program? I dont know of t his is related but I can not taking chances.I havent personally tried these out yet but I will & update you tomorrow if I am successful or not.Thanksbornlibra23Follow Up:Sorry All The Things That I Proposed Here Failed Yesterday.

I have a similar problem on a fixed wire ethernet connection. I get the animated network icon, showing the "Acquiring network address" message but there is an IP Address and the connection, running at speed of 100Mbps, seems to be working fine - I can check emails and browse, although I wonder if I'm running a little slow. I fix it by going into Device Manager and dis- and re-enabling the "1394 Network Adapter", associated with the "VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller", which controls my PCI Firewire card. Disabling the controller also disables the network adapter but there is no need to do both. Drivers involved (all in [win]\system32\drivers\): Microsoft 1394 Net Adapter ver. 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-0852) nic1394.sys VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller ver. 5.1.2535.0 1394bus.sys arp1394.sys enum1394.sys nic1394.sys ohci1394.sys It may have something to do with G Data IS2010, which I installed recently but I couldn't swear to it having triggered this. If it is GD then I don't think it's a fault with the s/w but maybe a setting I can't find or another issue it has "unmasked". Hope this helps, would love to know either way or from anyone with a permanent fix. Regards, Swatcher Windows XP Home SP3 up to date. NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller (ver.65.2.1.0)

I finally resolved the problem by completely re-installing Windows XP by disk as the built-in Packbell System restore facility failed. It was a long process that wiped off all software and documents on the hard drive resulting in having to re-install all software and updates one at a time but it does at last connect to the internet! Thanks for all your suggestions - hope you all find an easier solution than mine. Foytheboy
